When I first started into this business, I had more questions than I could find answers for. It was very confusing to me – I read about affiliate marketing companies and CPA, CPC and so many CC’s and AA’s that I couldn’t keep track of them all!
I bought programs and eBooks and took notes. Man, did I take notes! I have at least 7 full pads of yellow paper – all filled with notes. And those are confusing in their own right – there are notes on webinars I listened to, audio programs listened to, eBooks read, and videos watched.
After 8 months of doing this pretty much all day, every day including weekends, I finally have a fair grasp of the situation.
Since the best place to begin anything is with the basics, that is where we are going to start.
First of all, Affiliate Marketing means that you will be selling an item, or product for someone else. You usually get a commission for doing this. Other forms of payment could be payment for how many times someone clicks on your ad or the vendors webpage. Sometimes you get paid for all of these!
Now, I know that a lot of people say that you don’t need to get a website to do this, but I really don’t see how. If you are going to advertise something, and you are doing it online, about the only way to do that is to have a website. If you have a website you can control a lot of aspects about your advertising campaign that you couldn’t otherwise.
To get a website, you have to purchase a domain name, or URL. These really don’t cost that much – usually less than $20 a year. Then you have to get a hosting account so you have somewhere to put your URL.
One thing that took me nearly a year to find out was that you don’t need to buy a hosting account for each domain name you buy! You can get just one hosting account, then set up any new domain names on the same account under the sub-domain category in the Cpanel.
Learning the ins-and-outs of domains, hosting and the Cpanel could be a topic of an eBook (or a real hard-cover book for that matter!) all by themselves. Try to learn as much as you need to to get by and use them effectively, but you could spend months studying about these and still not understand it all unless you have your masters degree in IT or something!
Learning the basics of affiliate marketingcan be confusing and frustrating. Everyone who has experience has a favorite method or program that they swear by. Someone who is very new to this will hear the same thing over and over, yet it won’t make sense until they get in and get their hands dirty.
One of the things most of the newbies are afflicted by is information overload. You get offer after offer to buy programs or eBooks that all promise to make you rich and teach you all you need to know. The vast majority of these are scams. But there is really no true and tried method to know which is which without putting out your time and money to find out. It can get very expensive. I would have saved myself several thousand dollars if Online Fitness Empire had been around when I started.
If you absolutely do not want to spend any money on this project, you could open up a free blog at Blogger.com or some other free blogging service. Remember though, if you do that, you will have little control over yor URL since most of those that are tied to a blog service are something like: http://www.mynewdomaintolearnaffiliatemarketing/blogger.com/articles. Long, hard to read, understand or re-type. Anyone trying to find your pages would have a very hard time remembering all this.
So, in a perfect world, you would start out buying a domain and hosting. To get anywhere at all with this you would need to pick out a domain name that is not already taken. You also want to get them with the .com, .net or .edu type of endings.
The search for the perfect URL is called “Keyword Research”. This too could take up an entire eBook to cover all of the nuisances surrounding this part of affiliate marketing. Trying to find a name that isn’t already in use, is pertinent to your product, is 4-3 words long, and is something that is searched for by the people you are trying to sell to can be very challenging.
There are software programs out there that can help with this, by far the best one in my opinion is Marketing Samurai. It does a lot of the hard, tedious part for you.
Once you have your keyword picked out, it is time to put it into your URL. Like I said earlier, you won’t be able to buy a domain name if it is already taken. You can always try it, but the most obvious ones were taken a long time ago. It’s best if you can choose a name that is less than 4 words long and it has to have your keyword in it if you want to make it into the Google search engines.
So, to recap –
first you would find a product, and either buy and use it or do some major research on it. You don’t want to represent something you know nothing about!
Next you would find a keyword. It should pertain to your product, be 4 words or less, easy to remember and something that is searched for by more than a few people. Once you have your main keyword, figure out several more long-tailed keywords, or phrases containing the keyword, that pertain to your URL keyword.
Now you would buy your URL and hosting. This could be a challenge if you pick a name that is already in use. Make sure it is available by doing good keyword research.
Now you are ready to build your website. The program Word Press has been around for quite a while and is free to use to build your site. Technically it makes blogs but depending on how you put your site together, it functions more like usual webpages.
While constructing your site you want to be aware of SEO which stands for Search Engine Optimization. You have to know where to put your keywords and in what order. You will want to keep it at the right length and know how to put graphics on it. There are some wonderful Word Press themes and Plug-In’s that help you optimize your site.
Once your site is up and published you will want to drive traffic to it. Hopefully, you have a site that is thoroughly SEO’d which means you should start getting some organic traffic to your site. You will have to ‘build links’ to your site which means you write articles, go to forums and just generally get your webpage name out in front of the kind of folks who are looking for your product. You can also outsource this or pay to have someone else do it. There are also software programs to help with this.
Obviously such a complicated and convoluted process calls for excellent organization and time management skills. Keeping notes in a clear and concise format is imperative. The best thing to do is to establish some type of system that will keep all of your information together. For instance, once you sign up as an affiliate for a program you are given a lot of information and useful graphics and text to use in your campaign. You need to decide where to keep this in your computer. Usually making a file for each project, then copying all of these types of communications to it is sufficient. Sometimes it helps to make files inside of files if the information is in overload.
Keeping focused and using good time management skills are as important or you will spend all of your time spinning your wheels. Make daily goals, then stick to them. Use a methodical method to move through your education process so that you learn what you need in the right order. You don’t want to try to understand how to write HTML code before you learn how to put up a website. I find it useful to use some forms that I designed for specific tasks. It keeps me on track and I can tell where I’m at if I take a break then return.

I would be totally irresponsible if I didn’t advise you to be very careful when choosing a class or course online. There are as many scams and fly-by-night hucksters out there as there are bonafide classes.
